SAS controllers - The reliable enterprise standard

SAS controllers are ideal for managing data transfer between servers and storage devices in professional storage infrastructures due to their high transfer speeds, reliability and scalability. The organisation of the mass storage can be adapted to the requirements of the application area using different RAID configurations (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) to create expandable storage solutions with high levels of fail safety and the required performance. In addition to conventional HDDs (hard disk drive), SAS controllers also support the much faster SSDs (solid state drive), which enable lower latencies and higher access speeds through the use of flash memory.

The generation of the SAS standard used, both for the controllers and for the connected SAS devices, is the limiting factor for the achievable data rate:

  • SAS-1 achieves up to 3 Gbit/s
  • SAS-2 achieves up to 6 Gbit/s (6G)
  • SAS-3 achieves up to 12 Gbit/s (12G)
  • SAS-4 achieves up to 22.5 Gbit/s (24G)

Another advantage of the SAS interface is its backward compatibility, as SATA hard drives can also be connected and managed. Although this limits the performance of the system, the continued use of the lower-cost drives of the older standard may be useful during the transition from SATA to SAS.

Depending on the model and generation, SAS controllers often differ in the number of ports available for connecting hard drives and backplane boards. As IT environments grow, the use of expander cards to increase the number of ports is an alternative to replacing the controller. Other differences between controller models include the size of the cache, which acts as a buffer to reduce access latency, and support for battery modules to protect against data loss in the event of a power failure.

Installation options for SAS controllers in servers and storage systems vary by manufacturer. Universal PCI Express (PCIe) slots on the motherboard or riser can often be used, but proprietary slots such as AROC (Adaptive RAID On Chip) are also frequently provided for installation. Depending on the model and generation of servers from different manufacturers, compatibility with specific controllers must also be taken into account. HPE, for example, offers its own solutions for ProLiant servers with Smart Array Controllers, while Dell equips its PowerEdge systems with PERC controllers (PowerEdge RAID Controllers) for optimised performance.
