SATA interface controllers for cost-effective storage solutions

The SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) interface is an established older standard for connecting hard disks in servers, workstations and storage systems. Although SATA cannot keep up with the newer SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) or NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) standards in terms of transfer speed and management options, it is still a proven and affordable solution for applications where storage performance is not a primary focus. However, for systems with higher speed, reliability and parallel processing requirements, it is recommended to switch to SAS or NVMe technologies.

The advantages of SATA at a glance

Since most motherboards feature integrated SATA ports, separate SATA controllers are now only required in special scenarios to use this transfer standard. If, for example, a large number of drives need to be connected or complex RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) configurations are to be used, dedicated SATA controllers take over the management of data transfer between the host and the storage media to operate several drives in an array.
