Motherboards - The Platform for your servers

You lay the foundation for the performance of your server with the platform of the system, the mainboard. Both the potential performance of a server and the expansion options depend heavily on the motherboard used. Do you need a high-performance system for your application with several processors, large amounts of main memory (RAM) and high flexibility due to many expansion cards in PCI Express slots? Then you must pay attention to the necessary features that meet your requirements when choosing a suitable motherboard.
However, if you need motherboards as spare parts for existing systems, it is particularly important here to pay attention to compatibility with the existing components in order to avoid further costs. In this way, you can match your servers exactly to your area of application with the right mainboard.

Chipset and CPU socket - the basis of the motherboard

Depending on the required performance of the server and which components you want to use, the chipset and the existing CPU sockets are decisive factors. High-performance server systems often have up to four (4-way) and sometimes even eight (8-way) Xeon processors from the market leader Intel, which are characterised by their excellent scalability. But the competitor AMD also offers interesting options for high-performance servers with the Opteron CPUs and their modern successor models with the brand name Epyc.

The chipset fundamentally controls all components connected in the system and manages the data transfer between CPU, main memory, bus systems and interfaces. Thus, the chipset is responsible, among other things, for the possible bandwidth of LAN ports and SATA interfaces, the supported DDR memory standard and the usable revisions of PCI Express and USB. If you want to use PCIe Gen 3 expansion cards and DDR4 ECC RAM in your server system, for example, it is therefore necessary to use a mainboard with a compatible chipset in order to use the full potential of your components.

The CPU sockets, on the other hand, determine which processors can be used in the mainboard. Often, new CPU sockets also appear for new processor generations, as a changed arrangement and assignment of the contact pins often means that there is neither mechanical nor electrical compatibility with the previous processor sockets. This can be particularly critical if the performance of the CPUs in your existing systems is basically sufficient for your application, but compatible mainboards are hardly available as spare parts. This is because the production of older predecessors is often discontinued with the release of new generations. In order to avoid high costs due to a changeover to new hardware, the use of high-quality second-hand hardware is an option here.

SSI-CEB - The motherboard standard for server systems

The server generations of the various manufacturers vary in design, configuration and variety of connections, which is why manufacturer-specific mainboards are usually required for the respective server. However, these are usually based on the SSI-CEB form factor. This is a further development of the ATX standard defined by the Server System Infrastructure Forum (SSI), whereby the Compact Electronics Bay Specification (CEB) mainboards are larger in comparison and are mainly designed for the use of several CPUs.
With SSI-TEB (Thin Electronics Bay) for best use in server chassis with one and two height units (1U / 2U) and SSI-EEB (Entry-Level Electronics Bay), there are other form factor specifications that can be used depending on the structure and space conditions of the chassis.
