HPE ProLiant Blade Servers and BL Series Enclosures - Scalable solutions for high demands

In data centres and other complex infrastructures, the use of HPE ProLiant blade servers (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) offers several advantages over traditional rack models. For example, BladeSystem enclosures can hold multiple server blades in a space-saving manner, and can be quickly scaled to meet growing needs by adding additional modules. Costs and power consumption per server are lower for comparable performance, and cooling and cabling are more efficient because they are integrated into the blade enclosure. In addition, comprehensive management capabilities facilitate common management of ProLiant blade servers for high reliability and flexibility in managing available compute and storage resources.

HPE BladeSystem Enclosures

The HPE BladeSystem enclosure is the base of the blade infrastructure and provides slots for up to 16 server modules, depending on the model. Both half-height server blades and full-height modules are supported, and mixed operation of the formats provides flexible customisation options for a wide range of requirements. Redundant chassis fans ensure that the servers within the enclosure are cooled to maintain high performance across all installed modules. The power supply with redundant power supply units is also designed for stable and reliable continuous operation, with power supply units of different power classes being used depending on the number and configuration of servers.

The enclosures are equipped with administrator modules for server management and can be expanded with additional plug-in units to meet the requirements of the infrastructure, for example with Ethernet and Fibre Channel switch modules. Installation of the BladeSystem enclosure in the rack enables the required computing power and connectivity to be provided in a space-saving way. The modular design and integrated cabling of all modules facilitates the quick replacement of defective units, and also the addition of further servers.

HPE ProLiant Server Blades

Due to the special form factor, the layout and arrangement of components in HPE blade servers differs significantly from traditional rack servers such as the HPE DL series. Depending on the generation, HPE ProLiant server blades support up to two Intel processors of different CPU generations (central processing unit), equipped with compact CPU heatsinks for effective cooling in the narrow chassis. The memory slots for the supported DDR RAM (Random Access Memory) standards are also arranged in the most space-efficient way possible, allowing for extensive memory expansion even in the smallest footprints.

As conventional PCI Express (PCIe) expansion cards cannot be used, mezzanine cards optimised for blade servers are used to adapt the systems to individual requirements. The required connectivity to the existing network environment is provided by network cards in a separate FlexibleLOM slot, where different models can be installed depending on the required transmission speed.

Limited space often means that only two hard drives can be installed, using the more compact SFF (Small Form Factor) standard to integrate HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and SSD (Solid State Drive) drives. Depending on the RAID controller (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) used, hard drives with SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment), SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) or NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) connections can be supported. In practice, the limited storage options are not a problem as compatible storage blades are also available for HPE blade server solutions. These feature a higher number of drive bays and can provide the entire system with a large amount of storage.
