HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Plus - More performance for the small rack server

The compact ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Plus server from HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) features several technical enhancements with the Intel C256 chipset, building on the series proven strengths. Small and medium-sized businesses in particular can benefit from the qualities of a small and cost-effective rack server when space and budget are limited, but high performance, reliability and professional enterprise features are still required. In this context, iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) offers comprehensive remote management functions for simplified administration, and easy access to the inside of the chassis facilitates server upgrades or maintenance work, for example. To meet the needs of a wide range of applications, HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Plus servers can be configured with components of different performance levels:

  • Up to eight-core Intel Xeon processors

The processor socket on the ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Plus can accommodate a powerful Intel Xeon E-2300 series CPU (Central Processing Unit) with up to 8 cores, depending on the model. This gives the systems sufficient processing power for demanding workloads and virtualised environments. However, a Pentium Gold series processor can also be used as a more cost-effective option for lower requirements.

  • DDR4 memory up to 3200 MT/s

The Generation 10 Plus ProLiant DL20 server supports DDR4 RAM modules (Random Access Memory) in a total of four DIMM slots (Dual In-line Memory Module) for main memory. By using unbuffered modules (UDIMM) with a speed of up to 3200 MT/s and a total capacity of 128 gigabytes (GB), the systems are also suitable for memory-intensive workloads such as databases. At the same time, the ECC error correction technology offers increased protection against memory errors. As the achievable memory configuration can vary depending on the CPU used, it is important to check the manufacturer's technical documentation when upgrading memory.

  • Fourth generation PCIe slot expansion options

For further customisation, the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Plus server has a total of two expansion slots that support the PCIe 4.0 (PCI Express) standard. This allows for the installation of a variety of controllers and expansion cards, as well as optional network cards to integrate the systems into the existing network environment when the onboard LAN ports (Local Area Network)  are not fast enough. The PCIe riser offers a low profile slot (half height and length) and a full height, half length slot for larger adapter cards.

HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Plus chassis options meet different storage needs

Because the requirements for efficient server solutions in small and medium businesses are very individual, the space-saving 1U 19" chassis is also available in different versions, each of which enables different storage configurations.

The LFF chassis (Large Form Factor), for example, can accommodate 3.5" hard drives in two drive bays if the application does not require a large number of disks. It should be noted that specific models with hot-plug support are also available for this type of chassis, allowing hard drives to be replaced during operation.

The SFF chassis (Small Form Factor) supports four 2.5" HDDs (Hard Disk Drive) or SSDs (Solid State Drive), with the option to add two more disks via an additional drive cage. This allows advanced storage configurations to be achieved in a compact system. With optional accessories, the server can also be expanded with M.2 slots to take advantage of the fast access speeds of NVMe SSDs (Non-Volatile Memory Express) in the compact M.2 form factor.

To manage the installed drives, the ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Plus motherboard features an embedded Intel VROC (Virtual RAID on CPU) storage controller that provides basic functionality with support for SATA hard drives (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) and software RAID. However, for more complex storage configurations, a dedicated HPE Smart Array RAID controller (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) can be installed as an option, for example to use faster SAS disks (Serial Attached SCSI) and advanced RAID levels.

The Proliant DL20 Gen10 Plus chassis can be equipped with a variety of power supply options for optimal system power, depending on the configuration selected. A single 290 watt PSU (power supply unit) is sufficient for many configurations, but can be upgraded to redundant power supply kits that provide 500 or 800 watts and improved server fail-safety.
