Custom configuration options for HPE ProLiant ML30 tower servers
Each generation of ML30 servers has a single processor socket that can accommodate an Intel CPU (central processing unit) from a range of performance classes. These can be high performance Xeon processors or the more affordable Pentium and Core i3 series. These differ in both the number of cores and the clock speed, allowing you to cost-effectively adapt your computing power to your needs. The processor can also access DDR RAM (Random Access Memory) in four DIMM slots (Dual In-line Memory Module) to run memory-intensive applications, with the motherboard supporting different memory speeds and module capacities of the respective memory standards depending on the device generation and CPU model installed. When selecting memory modules, it is important to note that, unlike the larger rack and tower servers, the systems can only accommodate unbuffered RAM modules (UDIMM), which do not have their own register chip. However, the proven ECC (Error Correcting Code) technology is also supported here, enabling the servers to be used for mission-critical applications by detecting and correcting memory errors.
With its compact form factor and efficient cooling, the ProLiant ML30 tower chassis enables deployment in small office environments without the need for a dedicated server room, while still offering extensive expansion options. Different chassis variants with space for either four LFF (Large Form Factor) or eight SFF (Small Form Factor) drives allow storage configurations to be adapted to the requirements of the application. Depending on the RAID controller, SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) and SATA (Serial AT Attachment) hard disks can be used, and the faster SSD (Solid State Drive) models are often compatible alongside conventional HDD (Hard Disk Drive) hard drives. Newer generations of servers also often feature M.2 slots that can be equipped with the particularly compact and fast NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) SSDs.
Various expansion cards, such as network cards, controllers or graphic cards, can also be installed in PCIe slots (PCI Express) for individual adaptation to the existing infrastructure. The chassis supports full-height and full-length cards as well as smaller models, and the slots are based on different revisions of the PCIe interface depending on the device generation. This should be taken into account when selecting a server, for example to take full advantage of the performance potential of PCIe Gen4 expansion cards.
As reliability requirements can also vary depending on the application of a server, the ProLiant ML30 models are available with different power supply options. The base configuration typically includes a single high-efficiency power supply, but this can be replaced with a redundant power supply kit to increase protection against server downtime due to a power supply failure. This also allows a faulty power supply unit (PSU) to be replaced during operation to restore redundancy by supporting hot-plug functionality.
